this past weekend for our anniversary sam and i checked into the soho beach house. our beloved standard was at an all time high rate- we decided to switch things up. as an outsider (non-member/non hotel guest) i have just sort of stayed away, aside from the occasional drink, a new years… a dinner at cecconi’s. we arrived, made our way to the club bar for lunch and were greeted by tamara (a house manager…) later to the rooftop at ocho where we had some spicy tequila drinks and mexican yummies, with a backdrop of perfectly groomed humans uninhibitedly dancing to funk, tamara reappearing coaching our waitress to take good care of us. Then down to the pool for a lounge, a few more of those spicy little cocktail numbers… and up to the cowshed spa for steam and freshening with an abundance of truly delightful products. For dinner we went to mandolin beach (unbeatable greek/turkish,) whole fish, octo, a stones throw from the ocean, twinkling little string lights… and tamara, nine hours later, sending over champagne. next day pretty much repeat with some beach bumming between. i loved how varied the experience felt- so many little pockets to discover within one- all done in exquisite taste- literally not A ONE detail unthunk. upon checkout we grievously handed in our little seafoam cards of entry… assuring ourselves we will come back… we have found what we’d like to call our home away from home. we met fantastic people, shazammed numerous tunes, were aesthetically inspired, enthused at the prospect of our floridian future- and achieved the feeling of being so far away. for those who like eclectic, artistic, bohemian luxury, in an intimate setting, with a vibrant crowd- i strongly urge you to check into the soho beach house… and if you’re local, memberships offer all that good stuff mentioned above plus a ton of really great fitness, art, culinary, film screening, theme parties, etc. to fill your social calendar.

sunset beach

it’s no secret that i am a die hard standard miami fan. i’m quite trusting of andré balazs- who isn’t down with the chateau marmont? the standard’s for the most part, etc. the man has a knack for creating spaces that generate good vibes, a lively scene, a better than average looking crowd. if big ass rooms with memory foam mattresses and five star service are your priority- surely you’ve still hung out at one of these properties for cocktails, good tunes, and a laugh. my latest conquest is sunset beach on shelter island- a friend noted that it is reminiscent of my beloved standard miami, maybe the more authentic sister. i have never summer stayed in or near the hamptons- i’ve always opted for muskoka a. for proximity, b. cause it’s so beautiful, c. cause it’s what i know. regardless, sunset beach looks worth a try paired with a glass of balazs’s rosé.

this kinda trip

i was chatting with my friends at tkees yesterday and the conversation naturally led to travel. it got me inspired to pinpoint exactly the type of beachside feel i look for when choosing a destination. i like a relaxed vibe- no missoni coverups and wedges, more like a beachbum tkee (when not barefoot,) a slightly tipsy stance with a linen cover up falling off one shoulder, a damn good playlist… and a striped umbrella never hurts. there are a lot of cool little boutiquy places in and around tulum that are sparking my interest- along with blogstagrammers aplenty.

the freehand miami

my ultimate stay in miami is at the standard hotel- to switch things up my husband and i decided to stay at the freehand hostel for a couple of nights. i believe this kind of boutique hostel is the new wave- shared rooms along with privates, trendy restaurant, happening bar with well studied mixologists. our room feels a bit like a boiler room, but the modern furnishings, white linens, strategically chosen book selection, retro bathroom tile- are helping us put the concrete echoing walls in the back of our minds. beyond our room, the atmosphere is delightful, little sitting nooks, saltwater pool the temp of a babies bath, young happy people, fantastic music. if you’re more into a luxe stay- maybe pass on sleeping here- but check out the broken shaker (the hotel’s bar) for delicious drinks or their new restaurant 27. all in all we are loving the vibe.
